Greg Mullins: “This election we need to vote like our lives depend on it—because they do”

Former Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner and Climate Councillor Greg Mullins is warning that another disaster on the scale of Black Summer is coming—and that this federal election is a critical opportunity to vote for stronger climate action to keep Australians safer.

As extreme weather events continue to intensify, and with polling consistently showing that the majority of Australians support climate action, the Climate Council has launched a national advertising campaign to remind voters to put climate first at the ballot box:

“This is a critical climate election. Vote like our lives depend on it—because they do,” warns Greg Mullins.

“The fires we’re fighting now are nothing like those of the past. Our climate is changing, and our communities have suffered enough,” says Mullins, who has been fighting fires for more than 50 years in a long professional career and now as a volunteer.

The advertising campaign also points out the Federal Coalition’s poor track record on climate, and highlights that their 2025 election policies will increase – not cut – climate pollution from coal, oil and gas. This will put even more Australians in harm’s way.

Why this election matters

The next term of Federal Parliament will take us most of the way to 2030 – the end of this critical decade for climate action. It means the policies Australians support at the upcoming election will play a pivotal role in the race to secure a safer future for our kids.

The devastating impacts of climate change are all around us. After years of “climate whiplash”, where Aussies have been hurled from flooding rains to fierce fires and back again, it’s clear our political leaders need to turbocharge climate action.

After a lost decade under successive Liberal-National Governments, Australia is finally making progress on tackling climate pollution. With four million solar systems on rooftops and more electric cars on our roads than ever, we’re on the move towards a more secure and prosperous future for our kids.

This election, you can use the power of your vote to support parties and candidates who are committing to keep our momentum going and avoid backsliding into climate denial, delay, and distraction.

So this election, let’s vote like our kids’ future depends on it. Because it does.

AUSTRALIA’S CLIMATE ACTION IS AT A CRITICAL MOMENT.

While Australia has made progress, more work is needed. We have an important choice ahead of us: do we vote for accelerating the switch to clean energy? Or for prolonging the use of fossil fuels that worsen climate and economic impacts? The next Parliament will shape Australia’s climate future for decades to come.

So we need to vote like our lives depend on it. Because they do.
