James Smith AFSM retired in 2016 after a lengthy career in NSW Emergency Services, and is now a volunteer firefighter with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) on the NSW South Coast. On retirement, James was the Deputy Commissioner Field Operations for Fire & Rescue NSW, but immediately prior to that had acted as Commissioner of the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) for a year. During his career, James worked in a variety of operational and specialist positions, including as Officer in Charge of the Bushfire Section. He holds two Masters degrees and upon retirement, completed a Law degree.
