Call Time on Fossil Fuel Sponsorships

From flooded festivals, to concerts cancelled by bushfire threats and unsafe heat disrupting play at the tennis, footy and more, climate change is wreaking havoc on the activities and events we love. Meanwhile, polluting fossil fuel giants are using these events to buy community goodwill and distract from the planet-wrecking harm they cause.

Can you urge Australia’s prominent sports and arts institutions to #CallTime on fossil fuel sponsorship today, by taking the Fossil Fuel Free Sponsorship Pledge?

The governing bodies behind these institutions and events have the power to get fossil fuel sponsorships off the field, and out of our events, for good. By committing to reject sponsorship deals from fossil fuel companies, our clubs, organisations and sponsoring bodies can help protect Australians from dangerous climate change, and contribute to a safer, healthier environment for all.

Your email will be sent to key contacts at 10 sports and arts institutions, including:

Football Australia

A-League football teams in Australia have partnerships with Origin Energy, AGL, Newcastle Coal, and Australian Gas Networks.

AFL Commission

The AFL is sponsored by Shell V-Power, with teams in the league also sponsored by Woodside, Santos, Endeavour Petroleum, AGL, VIVA Energy, BHP, Caltex, Origin Energy and Rio Tinto.

Rugby Australia

Rugby Australia and the Wallabies are sponsored by Santos.

Australian Rugby League Commission

Ampol is a major sponsor of the National Rugby League, while teams within the league have partnerships with fossil fuel companies including Red Energy, Bravus, Tamboran and Metro Petroleum.

Cricket Australia

Cricket Australia has sunset its partnership with Alinta Energy, which is a fantastic step forward. By taking the Fossil Fuel Free Sponsorship Pledge, they can rule out entering into any new partnership arrangements with fossil fuel companies in the future.

Australian Museum & Galleries Association

The Australian Museums and Galleries Association is the national association and peak advocacy body representing museums and galleries. While the organisation itself is not partnered with fossil fuel companies, it encompasses various museums, galleries and regional and community arts centres that do accept sponsorship deals with polluting coal, oil and gas companies.

AusCycling

Santos is the naming rights sponsor of the Santos Tour Down Under, the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest cycling race

Netball Australia

Origin Energy is the major sponsor of Netball Australia and national women’s team, the Diamonds.

Surf Life Saving Australia

Surf Lifesaving Australia is sponsored by Ampol, while Woodside sponsors the Surf Lifesaving WA Nippers program.

Perth City to Surf

Fossil fuel giant Chevron is the major sponsor of the Perth City to Surf.

Together, we can show them that their members, fans and the Australian community want them take climate action seriously. Send an email to 10 of Australia’s biggest sports and arts institutions, and ask them to take the fossil fuel free sponsorship pledge.

The Climate Council has developed a fossil fuel free sponsorship code, Calling Time: How to Remove Fossil Fuel Sponsorships from Sports, Arts and Events, that details how planet-wrecking companies like Woodside, Santos, Chevron and Tamboran Resources are piggy-backing on Australia’s most loved and iconic pastimes to distract from their environmentally destructive impacts.
